Health Care Sheep

Earlier this week there was a Dr. Oz show where the topic was health care secrets to save you money. The doctors basically stated they were there for us as our ally and that so many of us have this misconception that it’s all about the business. Then they went through a litany of things we can ask for as patients that will save us money. These things are basically ‘secrets’ as the shows title topic demonstrates. There was one question I just couldn’t help but ask over and over again while watching this show.  If it’s not all about the business of health care and these doctors are really our ally’s for health, then why are all these discount tips a secret and why do we have to ask for them in order to get the discounts? Why don’t we just get them anyway?

Are we beginning to see why people feel it’s all about the business and our health care system is ranked 38th in the world?

Navy Blues

I’m finally able to fit into my Navy blue dress uniform. Now let me tell you that this uniform was fitted to me when I was 21 years old and weighed about 195 lbs. It’s made of 100% wool and does not stretch. At all. It is unforgiving in telling you the truth about how your body has changed over time. I won’t lie – it is a bit snug. But I take comfort in the fact that it’s not snug because I have more fat on my body than I did in 1987. It’s only because I have more muscle mass. OK, maybe a little more fat than I had back then. But it will be gone soon as I venture to sub 10% body fat levels. Unfortunately I couldn’t find my old navy cover (the hat).

12 Miles of Fun!

So I ran 12 miles today. This is a record for me. And I ran the entire distance in Vibram Five Fingers shoes. If you aren’t familiar with these, they are basically a shoe that is designed to simulate the feeling of barefoot running by giving the soles of your feet a thin layer of protection from all the little nasties on the road that may play havoc with the tender undersides of your foot. They are similar to reef or water type shoes and they have individual pockets for each of your five toes. When you walk around in them you feel like a ninja. Now to most runners, 12 miles isn’t a huge distance… until they try doing it un-shod. Most marathon runners would be whimpering after only a few miles if they tried doing it barefoot. Most runners in general have no idea just how weak their feet, ankles and lower legs really are. This is the result of carrying your feet in soft pillowy high heel foot coffins mile after mile which encourages poor running form and gives your feet nothing to work with in order to make them stronger.
